Biography
Dr. Nathaniel Fernandez (he/him) is the Director of Counseling and Psychological Services (CPS) and a licensed clinical psychologist (PSY34106). He received his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology and M.A. in Theology from Fuller Theological Seminary. He completed his APA accredited health service psychology internship at the University of California, Irvine, and completed his postdoctoral fellowship at Loyola Marymount University. Nathaniel has worked in university mental health settings across multiple universities in Southern California from his first training experiences through to his current work at the Mount, with a focus on inclusive service provision and positive prevention.
Nathaniel’s clinical interests include cultural, sexual, and gender identity development; undocumented student mental health and migration stress; first-generation student adjustment; spiritually integrative therapy; religious trauma; and early intervention/prevention. His approach to therapy is collaborative and solution focused with an emphasis on existential and feminist interventions. Outside of the therapy room, Nathaniel has published and presented research on a number of topics including positive development, suicide, and community level prevention. He also has experience teaching courses in multicultural counseling; research design and statistics; program evaluation; and human development.
A multiracial Chicano with deep historic ties to the greater Los Angeles area, Nathaniel is happy to be able to work with such a diverse group of students who also call this area their home. Outside of work, he enjoys time with his wife and kids; hanging out with friends; and is an avid consumer of podcasts and audiobooks.
