A cross-genre MFA program for contemporary storytellers

Mount Saint Mary's University's Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing program encourages writers to explore and create stories across cultures, languages, genres, and media, while also developing their craft through intensive workshops and a comprehensive curriculum.

The Mount's two-year, 36-unit MFA in Creative Writing program is an artist-training program for students who want to write professionally in the genres of novel, short story, playwriting, poetry, screenplay and non-fiction. We are ideal for working adults. Our format of meeting every other weekend, six times per semester, lets you fit into your life a graduate degree, making it easier to balance life's obligations with your academic pursuits. Creative Writing students are of all ages and from many different educational backgrounds. You do not need to have a degree in literature to apply.

Earn your MFA in Creative Writing at Mount Saint Mary's University, a gem right in the heart of Los Angeles.

What makes the Mount's MFA in Creative Writing program unique?

The MFA in Creative Writing program combines humanistic depth, intellectual rigor, multicultural and bilingual study, technology, a flexible weekend format, cross-training in multiple genres and practical preparation to create a distinctive graduate experience.

Rooted in Los Angeles. Connected to the world.

Los Angeles is one of the most culturally diverse cities in the world, where literature intersects with film, television, journalism, publishing, performance, and digital media. Our students draw inspiration from this vibrant creative environment while joining a close-knit community of writers committed to thoughtful dialogue, artistic collaboration, and social engagement.

As one of the few MFA programs with a distinctive commitment to multicultural, bilingual, and transnational storytelling, we welcome writers whose voices reflect multiple languages, identities, histories, and traditions. We believe that contemporary literature is enriched by diverse voices and that the future of storytelling is multilingual, interdisciplinary, and globally connected.

The Creative Writing department's educational philosophy

The MFA in Creative Writing program prepares writers who are:

  • Innovative storytellers working across genres and media
  • Critical thinkers grounded in the humanities
  • Writers who embrace multilingual and multicultural perspectives
  • Creative artists willing to take intellectual and aesthetic risks
  • Engaged literary citizens committed to strengthening communities through writing
  • Ethical collaborators who recognize literature as both an artistic practice and a public good

We foster an environment where freedom of artistic expression is matched by curiosity, empathy, and respect for differing perspectives. We believe the strongest literary communities are built through dialogue, generosity, and the exchange of ideas across cultures.
